Gordon Thorne

1941 — 2018

"For an Arts Trust to grow roots, it needs to create the same imperative that land trusts have begun to create. Both address the health of community by protecting certain space within community from privatization and speculation. We have come to understand the importance of this need when it relates to agricultural land, but not yet for the creative process space.

The underlying assumption of the [Arts] Trust is that imagination is essential to the creation of a future [human]kind will want to inhabit. A thriving creative arts community inspires and nourishes such community imagination.  Protecting spaces in which imagination manufactures ‘the culture and knowledge that are collective creations of our species’ … addresses on behalf of all people the basic need to have access to those spaces and the products of the creative process produced in them.”

Gordon Thorne created and helped to direct ‘creative’ spaces for over 40 years. He believed that "…a space’s creative potential—its capacity to spark and support imagination—is built over time from a myriad of small moments and events. It is the ‘nature’ of these moments and events that shape the history of a space, and determine in seen and unseen ways the character of what is imagined in it. It matters — the events and moments."
